Press Release
The Annual MITRA Conference Organised by the Youth Buddhist Network,
MITRA, brings together speakers and participants from the various
walks of life and traditions. All share one common interest, to
gain wisdom and inspiration from the teachings of the Buddha.
This year the Conference theme, "Having Enough, Finding Spiritual
Wealth," has been inspired by the pressing issue of the current
economic crisis that is affecting everyone from all across the
world. To find a richer wealth within compared to the temporary
pleasures of material wealth is an invaluable find.
With the University of Technology, Sydney as the backdrop for
the conference which is to be held on the 4th and 5th of July
2009, esteemed speakers from the Mahayana, Theravada and Vajrayana
traditions will gather together and spread the Dhamma over the
two day conference through talks, meditation sessions and interactive
discussions.
Background
MITRA is a network of young Buddhists that have a connection
with the Dhamma and also to each other. Current university students,
alumni and also members of the wider Buddhist community are essential
to the support that the network aims to give to the community.
Our active members currently include MacBuddhi (Macquarie University),
Unibodhi (Sydney University) and UTS Buddhist Society. MITRA is
also affiliated with Unibuds (University of NSW), Blia-yad (Nan
Tien Buddhist Temple Youth), Tzu-Ching (Taiwanese Relief Foundation)
& Lankarama (Sri Lankan Buddhist Youth).
The name of the network MITRA, stems from a Sanskrit word meaning
friend which clearly defines the relationship between MITRA and
its affiliated societies. MITRA can be thought of as a helping
hand for youth Buddhist Societies.
The group aims to provide support for existing youth Buddhist
societies and assistance to new ones who are striving to grow.
Regardless of whether it is moral support, physical assistance
or ideas, we hope that we will be able to help youth Buddhist
societies to achieve their goals in propagating the Dharma.
